How to Commission an Icon

This page is dedicated to individuals and churches interested in custom, hand-painted icons.

I would love to discuss creating a custom, hand-painted icon for your church, your home, or as a deeply meaningful gift to a loved one. I prayerfully consider both small and large-scale projects for both panel icons and murals.

Note: Icon painting is a specialized craft requiring careful execution. Icons are works of prayer and beauty meant to be treasured for generations. Their holy presence invites prayer and encounter with Christ and the Saints. I craft my icons with high regard for aesthetic quality and Orthodox iconographic traditions. For all custom icons, I prayerfully consider the life of the Saint depicted and reference relevant, existing icons.

Below are the general quotes for some common sizes. I am happy to discuss your ideas and offer a quote for any sized custom icon.

Single Figure Icons

The most popular custom icon is of a single figure saint (half-length / waist up). These are painted on flat panels, without gold, and begin at:

5x7" — $600
8x10" — $750
9x12" — $950
12x16" — $1100

I am happy to quote other options, such as a gold leaf halo and/or background. While this can increase the aesthetic beauty, it will not decrease its sacred value as an icon.

Custom sizes not listed above can be accommodated and quoted. Feast day icons with multiple figures, or more detailed icons will take considerably more time yet can be quoted upon request. Quotes generally include estimated shipping cost.

Another Popular Tradition

A popular Orthodox tradition is to commission an icon which depicts together the specific patron saints of the members of a family.

An icon depicting two patron saints is a perfect gift for a bride and groom for their wedding.

Pricing for icons with two standing figures on a flat panel begin at:

8x10" Two Figures — $850
9x12" Two Figures — $1050
12x16" Two Figures — $1250

I am happy to quote other options, such as a gold leaf halo and/or background. While this can increase the aesthetic beauty, it will not decrease its sacred value as an icon.

Important Details

Once you have commissioned me to create a custom icon, I will send you photos of your icon throughout the preliminary and overall painting process.

Note: A 50% non-refundable deposit is necessary for me to begin your icon. The remaining balance is due upon completion of the icon, prior to shipment. I accept payment by check, Venmo, or PayPal.

Commissioning an icon (whether hand-painted or a print) from Nick Makiej Studio constitutes an understanding of the above information on this page, as well as agreement to the following:

All deposits are non-refundable. A deposit (or payment in full) is required to begin the commission.
The remaining balance will be due upon completion of the commission, and prior to shipping.
Nick Makiej Studio reserves all rights to reproduce and/or reprint this original icon. The patron is granted permission to make printed reproductions (or mechanical/digital reproductions of any kind) for personal or devotional use, but never for commercial or promotional use.
